As one of the earliest applied corrosion-resistant nickel alloys, the produced Monel alloy has a composition of Ni-30Cu. Nowadays, Monel alloys produced in various countries also contain small amounts of iron, manganese, and other elements. The corresponding Chinese grade is 28-2.5-1.5 nickel-copper alloy (designated as NCu28-2.5-1.5). Its main composition is: copper 27.00% to 29.00%, iron 2.00% to 3.00%, manganese 1.20% to 1.50%, and the balance is nickel.
Other Monel-type alloys include Monel K 500, cast Monel, and S Monel. Monel K 500 alloy contains 3% aluminum, which can form the strengthening phase NiAl, enabling age-hardening, resulting in a higher strength than typical Monel alloys, hence the name high-strength Monel. Cast Monel alloy and S Monel alloy are used for producing castings. Although their compositions differ, both contain relatively high silicon content (2% to 5%) to improve their castability and wear resistance.

However, its corrosion resistance significantly decreases in the presence of aerated media or oxidizing agents. At room temperature, its corrosion rate is less than 0.5mm/a in sulfuric acid concentrations below 80% and hydrochloric acid concentrations of 20%. In medium concentrations of phosphoric acid and hydrofluoric acid, Monel alloy remains stable up to boiling temperatures, second only to platinum and silver in terms of stability. Yet, it is sensitive to stress corrosion and should undergo stress relief treatment before use.
Apart from its excellent corrosion resistance, Monel alloy also possesses good mechanical properties and workability, maintaining its room temperature strength even at 400°C. In the cold-rolled state, its tensile strength can reach 600-700MPa. Monel K 500, on the other hand, boasts even higher strength, with a tensile strength of 980-1120MPa in the cold-rolled state.
