What is SUS430?

SUS430, Japan SUS series stainless steel. SUS430 (F/FR) stainless steel and the national standard corresponding steel grade is 1Cr17.

Tensile strength is greater than 450, yield strength is greater than 205, HBS is less than 183 (data for the annealed state). Commonly used for architectural decoration, heavy oil burner parts, etc.

430LX in 430 steel to add Ti or Nb, reduce the C content, improved processing performance and welding performance. Used for hot water tanks, hot water supply systems, sanitary appliances, household durable appliances, bicycle flywheels and so on. 430 stainless steel, steel + 12% or more chromium can prevent oxidation caused by natural factors, called stainless steel, in the JIS code for the 430 number, so also known as 430 stainless steel. However, 430 stainless steel can not resist the oxidation caused by airborne chemicals, because of the increasing number of acidic chemicals in the air, so 430 stainless steel is often used for a period of time, there will still be oxidation (rust) due to unnatural factors.

What is SUS430

Characteristics

  1. Corrosion resistance: SUS430 stainless steel performs well in a wide range of environments, with particularly good resistance to dilute nitric acid (HNO3).
  2. Thermal conductivity: its thermal conductivity is better than austenitic stainless steel, and the coefficient of thermal expansion is also smaller, which makes it very suitable for applications that require thermal insulation effects.
Processability: SUS430 is easy to process hot and cold, and is suitable for a variety of manufacturing processes.
  3. Stress corrosion resistance: the material has good stress corrosion resistance, is a typical non-heat treatment hardening ferritic stainless steel.

Material Advantages

  1. Low cost: Compared to SUS304, SUS430 is less expensive, making it an affordable option.
  2. Mechanical properties: Despite being nickel-free, SUS430 has high tensile strength and hardness.
  3. Welding properties: the addition of the stabilising element titanium improves the mechanical properties of the weld area and improves welding performance

What is the specific chemical composition of SUS430 stainless steel?

  • Carbon (C): ≤0.12 per cent
  • Silicon (Si): ≤ 0.75%
  • Manganese (Mn): ≤ 1.00%
  • Sulfur (S): ≤ 0.030%
  • Chromium (Cr): 16-18%

Application areas

  1. Architectural decoration: Due to its smooth and beautiful surface, SUS430 stainless steel is commonly used in architectural decoration and interior decoration.
    Kitchenware

  2. Manufacturing: because of its high temperature resistance, corrosion resistance and not easy to deformation characteristics, SUS430 is widely used in the production of cookers, ovens, refrigerators and other kitchen equipment.

  3. Home appliances: including microwave ovens, electric heating kettles, dishwashers and other household appliance parts.

  4. Automotive parts: used in automotive exhaust systems, mufflers, decorative strips and other parts.

  5. Chemical equipment: such as absorption towers, heat exchangers, storage tanks, etc., especially in HNO3 chemical equipment.

  6. Medical devices: due to its good biocompatibility and corrosion resistance, SUS430 is used in surgical instruments, syringes, needles and other medical devices.

SUS 430 is a Japanese standard stainless steel, equivalent to the AISI 430 grade. It is a ferritic stainless steel that contains approximately 16-18% chromium and is known for its good corrosion resistance, formability, and magnetic properties. SUS 430 is commonly used in kitchen utensils, appliances, and automotive trim due to its attractive appearance and reasonable cost.

430 stainless steel is equivalent to several other standards and grades across different countries, including:

  • AISI 430 (USA)
  • 1.4016 (European EN Standard)
  • X6Cr17 (German DIN Standard)

These equivalents share similar chemical compositions and mechanical properties, making them interchangeable for most practical purposes.

430 stainless steel is classified as a ferritic stainless steel. It belongs to the 400 series, which is characterized by high chromium content and low carbon content, providing good corrosion resistance and formability. However, it is less resistant to corrosion and high temperatures compared to austenitic stainless steels like 304 and 316.

430 stainless steel can be used outdoors, but with some limitations. While it offers decent corrosion resistance, especially in dry environments, it is less resistant to corrosion in harsh or marine environments compared to 304 or 316 stainless steels. For mild outdoor conditions, 430 can be suitable, but in more aggressive environments, it may rust or tarnish over time.

The choice between 430 and 304 stainless steel depends on the application:

  • Corrosion Resistance: 304 stainless steel is superior due to its higher chromium and nickel content, making it more suitable for harsh environments.
  • Cost: 430 is more cost-effective, making it a good choice for less demanding applications.
  • Magnetism: 430 is magnetic, while 304 is generally non-magnetic.

In general, 304 is preferred for applications requiring higher corrosion resistance and durability, while 430 is chosen for cost-sensitive applications where extreme corrosion resistance is not critical.

No, 430 stainless steel is generally not considered better than 316. Here’s why:

  • Corrosion Resistance: 316 stainless steel has superior corrosion resistance, particularly in saltwater and acidic environments, due to its higher molybdenum content.
  • Durability: 316 also offers better resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, making it more suitable for aggressive environments.
  • Cost: 430 is less expensive, making it more suitable for applications where cost is a primary concern, and the environment is less corrosive.
